Synopsis:

Escaping her seemingly perfect wedding, Naomi Witt arrives in rough-around-the-edges Knockemout, Virginia, running to the rescue of her estranged twin, Tina.
Too bad for Naomi her evil twin hasn’t changed at all.

After helping herself to Naomi’s car and cash, Tina leaves her with something unexpected: the 11-year-old niece she didn’t know she had. Now she’s stuck in town with no job, no plan, no home and a whole lot of extra responsibility.

There’s a reason local barber Knox doesn’t do complications or high-maintenance women, especially not the romantic ones. But since Naomi’s life imploded right in front of him, the least he can do is help her out of her jam. And just as soon as she stops getting into trouble, he can leave her alone and get back to his peaceful, solitary life.

At least that’s the plan, until their lives begin to entwine in ways they never imagined . . .

My Thoughts:

I’m no stranger to the work by Lucy Score having read By a Thread and Forever Never earlier this year. I was left slightly deflated after reading those books as I had high expectations for the author seeing as I’d heard such great things about her Knockemout Series. As you can imagine, I was slightly nervous about reading the Knockemout series for my letter T of the A-Z Reading Challenge, especially since I’d recently seen mixed things about the series.

Things We Never Got Over (TWNGO) follows Naomi who visits the town of Knockemout to help her twin sister Tina who is seemingly in trouble. Only when Naomi arrives, she discovers that Tina has a daughter and has stolen Naomi’s belongings and left her daughter with her.
Naomi struggles to navigate through town, as everyone believes her to be Tina, the conniving con artist, who causes nothing but trouble.

After realising Tina has taken off with all of her belongings, Naomi is stranded in Knockemout with no choice but to look after her new niece.

Whilst navigating through town, she is met with the grumpy bar/bartender Knox who also believes her to be Tina. Once Naomi convinces him that she’s not her juvinelle sister, Knox provides Naomi with help in the new town she’s residing in.

Tension quickly brews between the pair, but Knox puts a stop stating that he doesn’t do relationships – leading the pair to embark on a sex only relationship.

After spending time in Knockemout for a few weeks, Naomi decides it’s time to contact her parents to reveal they have a granddaughter.

Following their first one night stand, Knox and Naomi are interrupted by her parents who arrive in Knockemout to meet their granddaughter.

Naomi’s parents jump to the conclusion that her and Knox are dating following the end of her relationship with her fiancé, who was revealed to be starting to abuse her. This prompts Knox to jump in and agree that they are dating, before suggesting to Naomi that they embark on a fake relationship.

The pair begin to navigate their new fake relationship, whilst working to obtain custody of Waylay. As the pair continue their fake relationship, they become close friends, leading Naomi to believe she’s not good enough.

The cottage where Naomi and Waylay are residing in is broken into, suspected by Tina who ransacks the cottage in an attempt to find something. Knox becomes protective of Naomi and Waylay, leading Naomi to become more confused by her feelings.

Knox becomes scared of his feelings and cuts off his arrangement with Naomi, following a visit to his father, who Naomi unawaringly meets.

After their fake dating breakup, Naomi is devastated, after believing that they could’ve been something and that Knox truly liked her. Naomi must put in a brave face, as she has to continue working at the bar Knox owns. The small town of Knockemout side with Naomi and begin freezing Knox out over breaking up with Naomi.

When Naomi starts her shift, she is sucker punched at the sight of Knox kissing a woman who is revealed to be called Lina. Naomi is approached by Lina who asks her to go for drinks in an attempt to explain. Reluctantly, Naomi goes with Lina, where she reveals that she herself was a previous “not girlfriend” of Knox.

Knox’s brother Nash is shot and left in critical condition. This leads Knox to be worried about his brothers survival as it is revealed that a Knox won the lottery and tried to give money to support his brother, who used the money to fund the local police station, causing a rift between the pair.

After speaking to Lina, Knox reveals his truth to Naomi and his reasonings for not dating – his mother died in a car accident, which lead to his father to turn to drugs, ultimately making Knox believe he can’t let anyone in, out of fear of being let down.

Naomi is shocked by the revelation and decides to take time to comprehend it. Only as she returns back to her shift, she’s met with her sister Tina who tricks Naomi into believing Waylay is in trouble.

Believing Waylay may be in danger, Naomi goes with Tina, but is kidnapped and taken to a warehouse where Tina’s boyfriend is demanding the handover of a USB drive with important and valuable information on it. Tina’s boyfriend is the son of a famous mafia leader, who is now attempting to pave his own way. Waylay reveals it’s hidden at the local library.

When Tina realises that her boyfriend won’t allow Waylay or Naomi to go unharmed, she comes up with a plan to switch places with Naomi, only her boyfriend isn’t that stupid enough.

After discovering that Naomi has disappeared from her shift, Knox and Nash track down where she is and attempt to save her. When they arrive, Tina and her boyfriend flee the scene to retrieve the usb from the library.

Waylay reveals that she made a copy of the USB for safe keeping and that the information stored on the usb was a list of police names, which included Nash.

After reuniting with Naomi, Knox realises he can’t be without her or Waylay and decides to reconcile and give a real relationship a go.

The story ends with Knox and Naomi marrying one another, with Waylay becoming a permanent and official part of their family, whilst becoming older sister to her adopted siblings that Knox and Naomi adopted, following her fertility issues.

I must say, I was pleasantly surprised after reading Things We Never Got Over as I enjoyed it more than any other book of Lucy Score that I’ve read.

I was worried about embarking on this book because of its length (500+ pages) and because I’d seen on TikTok a lot of people having negative opinions on it. So including these reviews with my own opinions of previous books I’ve read, I wasn’t hopeful.

I struggled initially with reading this book, whilst the settings were being laid out and the characters were being introduced. Once I hit 40% of the way in, I started to enjoy it a lot more – to the point where I lost track of time and ended up reading at 1am, something that’s rare these days. Although, I will say I definitely think she book could’ve been a lot shorter!

I loved the character development between Naomi and Knox. I wasn’t expecting the whole evil twin sister plot, but it reminded me a bit of Method of Matrimony by Anne Malcom.

After reading the first book of the Knockemout series, I’m not worried about reading the other two books. I’m looking forward to reading about Sloane and Lucian and how their love/hate relationship will pan out.

I liked how this book ended – we were able to read a full epilogue that looked into the future, mentioning all the characters in future books of the series, without spoiling who they end up with.

My Thoughts:

Hitting my stride with completing the choices for my A-Z Reading Challenge, and letter S had to go to Stolen Heir by Sophie Lark.

I first was introduced to Sophie’s work after reading Brutal Prince for my letter B of the alphabetical series. I knew after reading that book that I needed to continue the series and reading books by her.

Stolen Heir follows Nessa Griffin, youngest of the Griffin children. After Nessa’s brother Callum killed mafia boss, “the butcher”, Mikolaj sets out a plan to seek revenge of kidnapping his younger sister.

When Nessa is driving, she is forced to pull over after her car breaks down. After being left stranded, a car comes to her rescue to help her, only they drug her and kidnap her.
When she awakes, she is Mikolaj’s house, where he plans to keep her, as punishment for Callum, before ultimately killing her.

After realising that Nessa is missing, the Griffin’s hunt high and low for signs of her, leading Mikolaj to be satisfied with his work so far.

Stolen Heir follows Nessa in her captivity and Mikolaj as he attempts to avoid her, whilst keeping her on lockdown.
As Nessa spends time in captivity, she befriends the maid, who she learns small amounts of Russian from. When overhearing conversations, she hears Mikolaj’s plan to kill her brother Callum, resulting in Nessa to plead her case for him not to.

Despite attempting to keep his distance, Mikolaj can’t stay away as he’s intrigued by the innocent Nessa, leading to tension to develop between them.

Initially, Mikolaj holds out against the temptation but as he spends more time with Nessa, his will begins to give, resulting in them to sleep with one another.

Following their night together, Mikolaj develops a new plan of marrying Nessa in exchange for joining forced with Nessa’s mafia family.

When Nessa returns home, the Griffin’s are relieved to know their daughter is safe, only this relief is short lived once Mikolaj reveals his plan to marry Nessa. Initially, they are against the marriage between the pair, but ultimately have no choice in the matter.

Another Sophie Lark book which I enjoyed and devoured! I found myself unable to put this down, constantly saying “one more chapter” until oops, it’s 3am and I’ve finished the whole book!

The whole story of this book gave me Beauty and the Beast vibes, that’s pretty much the only way I could sum it up. The beauty (Nessa) is captured and eventually wears down the beast (Mikolaj). The beauty ends up having a space for her hobbies, in Stolen Heir, instead of it being a library, it’s a dance studio. Then eventually the pair fall in love!

Even though I enjoyed this book, Brutal Prince still remains my favourite of the series so far. I felt like Stolen Heir was a nice little palette cleaner as it was short and sweet, just what I needed.

I love a slow burn romance that has tension building, but I always want the tension to be a bit longer with Sophie Lark’s books. I think in general, I could read 300+ more pages with Sophie’s books.

This was probably the spiciest book I’ve read in a while and THE ILLUSTRATIONS!!! 🥵. Hot and steamy, everyone say Thank you Sophie! Can we normalise adding illustrations into all books, please?
I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series and hope that they live up to Brutal Prince.

Genre: Contemporary Romance

My Thoughts:

I was worried that after reading Powerless and Quiet In Her Bones that my motivation would been severely impacted when it came to reading letter R of my A-Z Reading Challenge. However, my friend Izzy reassured me that Reckless was another top book by Elsie Silver and had made her feel feelings similar to when she read Heartless. So it’s safe to say, my excitement returned very quickly.

Reckless follows Winter Hamilton, estranged sister of Summer Hamilton who arrives in Chestnut Springs to escape her controlling ex husband and start a new life as doctor at the local medical centre.

When she arrives she is met with cocky and irritating Theo Silver, who she had a run in with at the gas station. Theo instantly takes an attraction to Winter and enjoys messing her around.

After the pair embark on a drunken night out, the pair end up sleeping with one another, leading to Winter to become pregnant, despite her being told she’d never have kids.
When Winter discloses her pregnancy to Theo, she is met with a message from him expressing his un interest to father the baby they created.

The story progresses nine months later, where Winter has given birth to a baby girl named Vivienne and is navigating being a single mum, whilst attempting to reconcile her relationship with Summer. Winter is surrounded by the support of the Eaton family, who are unaware of the identity of the father of Vivienne.
Theo returns home, shocked to find Winter is a mother and when speaking to someone, he puts the pieces together and realises he is Vivienne’s father.

After his discovery, Theo is devastated to learn he missed out on his daughter’s birth and to witness Winter step into motherhood. The pair discuss the night Winter messaged Theo about her pregnancy, where Theo reveals he handed his phone over to his assistant who was responsible for his response.

The story follows the pair navigating co parenting, whilst Theo attempts show Winter that he is trustworthy and not like the guy she believed him to be from “his” initial response.

Theo shows Winter how consistent he can be, by constantly being around, for not only his daughter, but also for Winter.

As the pair spend more time together, the spark between them reignites, leading Winter to put her defences up out of fear that she’ll be hurt again.

Theo becomes protective over Winter and Vivienne after discovering that Winter’s ex husband has been sending her messages threatening her to take Vivienne off her. This leads to Winter to undergo a DNA test with Vivienne to prove the father of her daughter. This leads Theo to have some doubts about whether he is the father of Vivienne, which puts a strain between Theo and Winter. When the tests come back, it reveals that Theo is the father of Vivienne.

The tension between the pair continues to develop, where Winter finally sees for herself that Theo is all in, whether she is ready for him or not. Theo provides Winter with the love and comfort she never had growing up and helps her learn that she is lovable, despite her having negative thoughts about her self worth.

THEO SILVER!!! The man that you are 🥵😮‍💨.

It is definitely safe to say that I fell IN LOVE with Theo in this book, pretty much from the start.

I love that we were introduced to them towards the end of Powerless and how the beginning of Reckless picked straight up from when they were introduced in Powerless!
I felt so sympathetic towards winter and her story with her sister Summer from Flawless. I felt a lot of emotions for her during her inner monologue of self doubt and negativity of her self. I truly believed she deserved the world in her book and I felt like I just wanted to give her a big hug. I can’t remember how I felt towards her before reading her story, but I imagine it wasn’t the most positive.

I have to take my hat off because I didn’t think I was a reverse Grumpy X Sunshine type of gal. Typically I like them to be a broody male character and a sunshine female lead, but what I’ve discovered recently and in a few other books, is that I lovethe reverse grumpy sunshine trope. I loved both Winter and Theo’s personality’s and how they bantered back and forth. I love how Theo’s sunshine personality was more of a flirty and tease, then I loved how Winter’s grumpy personality was more guarded, but could give back the energy.

Gawd! I just loved everything about this book and I was silently screaming SO much at 1am. I haven’t felt like this for two characters since Heartless I don’t think. I felt all the emotions in this book – the laughing, the giddiness and the giggling.

I loved the family dynamic as always. I loved Harvey’s little comments and LOVED seeing Theo being protective of Winter at the table with Beau. I loved the featuring of previous characters and being reminded of their personalities, such as Willa with her antics and interactions with Luke and Harvey, and Rhett with his dry humour line liners.

I truly am going to miss the Chestnut Springs universe, but I still have the final book to read, which I’m savouring. I also have the Gold Rush Ranch to read which I’m also savouring!

Synopsis:

My mother vanished ten years ago.
So did a quarter of a million dollars in cash.

Now, she’s back. Her bones clothed in scarlet silk.

When socialite Nina Rai disappeared without a trace, everyone wrote it off as another trophy wife tired of her wealthy husband. But now her bones have turned up in the shadowed green of the forest that surrounds her elite neighborhood, a haven of privilege and secrets that’s housed the same influential families for decades.

The rich live here, along with those whose job it is to make their lives easier. And somebody knows what happened to Nina one rainy night ten years ago. Her son Aarav heard a chilling scream that night, and he’s determined to uncover the ugly truth that lives beneath the moneyed elegance . . . but no one is ready for the murderous secrets about to crawl out of the dark.

Even the dead aren’t allowed to break the rules in this cul-de-sac.

Genre: Suspenseful Mystery-Thriller Fiction

My Thoughts:

I came across Quiet In Her Bones by Nalini Singh during my research into titles that aligned with the A-Z Reading Challenge. I hadn’t previously heard of Nalini or her work, but the premise of the story intrigued me and I’ll never say no to a mystery thriller book.

Quiet In Her Bones follows Aarav, ten years after the disappearance of his mother, Nina. Aarav is met the shocking news that his mother and her car have been found in a local forest, which concealed her car for the past ten years.

Aarav is met with the news that his mother is dead and likely died the night of her disappearance, where evidence suggests that her car veered off the road.

Police begin their investigation asking Aarav and his father questions regarding the night she disappeared.
With the reappearance of his mother, Aarav uses the knowledge of what he knows the night Nina disappeared, in an attempt to find answers on what happened to her.

When questioned by the police, Aarav reveals an argument that took place between his mother and father, that lead to smashing of ornaments, before Nina ultimately left the house in a rush, driving off in her car. Aarav details how when he went downstairs, he saw the aftermath of their argument and even blood.

Living in a small neighbourhood, Aarav is very familiar with his neighbours who express their own condolences about Nina’s death. Interactions with his neighbours prompt Aarav to look into his neighbours and their connections to Nina.

Leading up to his mother’s reappearance, Aarav was involved in a car accident that left him on crutches and heavy pain medication. Whilst visiting his doctors, they become concerned that he’s abusing his medication and attempt to send him to rehab.

Aarav finally discovers the truth about his mother’s death: one of the neighbours was abusing his wife’s sister, killing her before she could reveal it to her sister. Nina ends up discovering this and is driven off the road by the neighbour to prevent his wife from finding out, before switching Nina to the drivers seat to make it look like an accident. The neighbour also began poisoning Aarav in his brownies, in an attempt to deter him away from discovering the truth.

I think this book has to be up there with some of the most boring and confusing books I’ve ever read.

I really struggled to follow along with the plot of this story and who the characters were. I felt like every 5 minutes or so, I was coming across a character who I had no recollection of being introduced to.

In terms of the main character Aarav, I really struggled with reading his inner monologue and felt like majority of the time, it wasn’t needed and therefore, I tended to skim read it. I’m pretty sure this book is the first I’ve read of a male main character and read solely from their POV and I can’t say I overly like it.

I’m so surprise I was able to read this book in such a short time 4 days! My motivation for it to be finished was purely to say that I had completed reading a Q titled book! I’m so surprised that it took me longer to finish Powerless by Elsie Silver than this!

After looking at the GoodReads reviews, I decided to persevere with this book because majority of the reviews said very positive things about it. However, after finishing it, I can’t understand them at all.

I also felt like the plot was very confusing and jumped around a lot of the time, making it very hard to follow which impacted my enjoyment for reading it – but, it could’ve been due to me simply not enjoying it from the start and therefore missing details?

At times, I felt like I was reading in a foreign language.
I did predict somethings correctly though – I predicted that the fudge Aarav was eating had been drugged and the reason for his memory loss and headaches! This plot of the story has lead me to believe that the author potentially made the story confusing to make readers feel how Aarav was and as confused he was in his drugged state.

At one point, I thought he was dying and that he had killed his mother. I also thought his mother would’ve came back alive.

All in all, the reveal of who done it was slightly anticlimactic because of the number of characters introduced. During the reveal I was like who is this again!

I can’t say I’ll be eagerly jumping to read anymore from Nalini Singh in the future.

My Thoughts:

Here we are, back with another letter choice for my A-Z Reading Challenge, which spoiler alert: will be the next few posts!

I was so happy to reach letter P of the alphabetical reading challenge as it meant that I could revisit the Chestnut Springs Series and delve back into the cowboy ranch life!
I must say, I set out slightly worried about reading book 3 of the series because book 2 just had so much hype and popularity around it, which lived up to its name, but I hadn’t heard much noise for Powerless.

Powerless follows Sloane Winthrop, cousin of the Eaton clang, the day of her wedding day where she’s met with the not so surprising reveal that her soon to be husband, Sterling Woodcock was caught having an affair.
With the evidence in her hand, Sloane puts the wedding on hold to make a decision, much to her father’s disappointment as he is in favour of Sloane and Sterling uniting for the sake of his business.

In steps Sloane’s best friend Jasper, who helps her escape her problems (quite literally!). Jasper and Sloane escape the wedding and take refuge at the Wishing Well Ranch until the pressure of the wedding dies down. Sloane is met with several disappointing messages from both her father and ex fiancé, who both attempt to persuade her to forgive Sterling, only Sloane has no interest in doing so, as she begins to realise it wasn’t a marriage of love.

Jasper and Sloane are met with devastating news that Beau Eaton, has gone missing in combat. Sloane is the maternal cousin of Beau and Jasper is been friends with him since they were in high school, when Beau took a homeless Jasper in.

The uncertainty of Beau’s life puts Jasper on edge, who is ultimately put on bench of his hockey games.

When Harvey reveals that a truck needs driving to Violets ranch, Jasper volunteers and is accompanied by Sloane, who is set to avoid being bombarded by her family.

The pair set out on the road in icy conditions, whilst navigating the awkward and unsaid words between them. Sloane has had a lifelong crush on Jasper and after being turned down at prom by him, she took it upon herself to distance herself from him as he didn’t share the same feelings. This distancing led her to end up in a relationship with Sterling, as she fully believed she never had a chance with Jasper. The distance between them resulted in Jasper to realise his own feelings for Sloane, but was ultimately scared to ruin their friendship.

As the pair make their way to Violet’s farm, Jasper reveals his heartbreaking childhood and his own guilt for the death of his sister’s death. Jaspers sister was killed during a family biking accident, where Jasper took charge and crossed the road to ensure it was clear. Miscommunication led to Jasper’s sister mistaking his hand signal telling her to stop, as a sign that it was safe to cross – leading her to cross the road and be hit, killing her. Following this accident, Jasper became estranged from his parents after they placed blame on young Jasper for his sister’s death.

Beau met Jasper after seeing him being picked on by others at school, leading him to stick up for him and bring him back to the ranch, where he’s been ever since.

Sloane and Jasper arrive at Violet’s ranch where they drop off the supplies and catch up with Violet and her friends. Whilst enjoying each others company, Jasper receives news that Beau has been found safe and sound, leaving the whole family relieved.

Tension between the pair starts to increase before finally, the pair admit their feelings for one another and return to Chestnut Springs.

*I would like to point out that I have been very lazy with my reviews and read this book back in July and it’s now currently September. So that’s why it’s very vague because I don’t remember all the details*

Since reading the Chestnut Springs series, I’ve realised that Elsie Silver is my ride or die author, along with a selection of others. I just think anything she writes, I will read it. It was safe to say that I 100% loved jumping back into the Wishing Well Ranch!

I 100% stand by that Heartless – Book 2 of the series stands as my favourite so far. However, Powerless brought back my excitement for reading and the giddiness that comes along with building a connection to the characters of the story – something I’d not felt in recent books. This definitely upped my motivation for reading.

Despite the fact that I enjoyed reading about Sloane and Jasper’s love story, I wish we learned more about Jasper’s history. From teasers and reviews I’d seen online, I was lead to believe his story would’ve been gut wrenching, which it was, but I expected it to be a little bit more full on. I felt like Elsie could’ve leaned into his history a little bit more, to make readers feel broken for him – or, maybe she did and I just didn’t connect to history as much?

I say it for every Elsie Silver book review and I’ll say it again – my favourite part will always be the family dynamics of the series. It’s always something I look forward to and find myself loving the most (aside from brooding characters). Again, I loved the wholesomeness of the family and the banter back and forth between the characters – especially Harvey’s comments on Sloane and Jasper’s babies being tail babies because they were brought up as cousins, although they’re not.

I’m finding that, as I continue through the series and towards the end, I’m starting to feel more and more sad that I’ll eventually be leaving the ranch life behind and be saying a final goodbye to the characters. This series has brought me so much joy and I feel so strongly about the characters of the books.

I will say, so far, Powerless has been the book that took the longest for me to get through and I honestly think that’s because I didn’t connect as much to Sloane and Jasper’s story as I have done with others. I also think this was to do with the setting of the story and how they were on a road trip, as opposed to being on the ranch like the other stories have been.
