My Thoughts:

Rebecca Serle is an author who I’ve seen floating around on the internet who’s not particularly popular on BookTok (or at least not that I’ve seen), but an author who I’ve been interested in exploring. I first became familiar with her work, with her book In Five Years Time, which I’m yet to read. I’d seen One Italian Summer floating around when I was researching my A-Z Reading Challenge letter choices and if I’m honest, the location of where the book was set instantly drew me in. I don’t even think I read the synopsis of the story, just that the idea of reading a book set in Italy was enough for me to add it as my choice for the letter O!

One Italian Summer follows Katy reeling in the death of her mother and best friend, who had all the answers to Katie’s questions. Now Katy must begin navigating life post her mothers death, only she’s faced with the devastating trip to Positano – a trip she’d planned to take with her mother, to experience the stories she was told by her mother when she was younger. The pair had planned an itinerary that would revisit memories that carol had the summer before she met Katy’s father. A trip Katy had waited years to experience, but now must do it alone.

Before Katy Leaves, she leaves the status of her marriage unknown, believing that she needs time to find herself again and is therefore, unsure on whether her marriage is survivable.

As soon as Katy steps foot on the Amalfi coast, she begins to feel her mother’s spirit. Buoyed by the stunning waters, beautiful cliffsides, delightful residents, and, of course, delectable food, Katy feels herself coming back to life.

And then Carol appears—in the flesh, healthy, sun-tanned, and thirty years old. Katy doesn’t understand what is happening, or how—all she can focus on is that she has somehow, impossibly, gotten her mother back.

In addition to her mother appearing, Katy meets a fellow and brooding American called Adam, who is scouting potential locations for the hotel company he works for.
Over the course of one Italian summer, Katy gets to know Carol, not as her mother, but as the young woman before her. Additionally, Katy gets to know Adam romantically whilst struggling to connect with her life back home, due to poor communication.

As the story progresses, we see Katy desperately cling to the memories of her mother, whilst navigating her mother in the flesh, thirty years younger. The pair spend a series of days together experiencing the Italian lifestyle as friends, whilst Katy continues to get to know Adam.

When Katy visits her mother’s villa in Italy, she comes across a picture of a young girl who she recognises as herself. This leads Katy to realise that her mother tweaked the story she was told growing up and that her famous Italian trip took place during Katy’s early childhood. This deeply upsets Katy, who feels like her parent’s marriage was a lie, leaving Carol equally confused at the strangers sudden outburst. Katy becomes paranoid that Carol must follow through with the same steps as Katy’s history to ensure that she can be there for Katy’s childhood like she had been, but quickly realises that she can’t determine the future.

Katy leaves Carol to return back to the hotel where a strange thought occurs to her. The hotel staff reveal the current date, which is to be 30 years in the past. This reveals that Katy had been transported magically back to her mother’s famous Italian trip, where she experienced it for herself.

When Katy wakes up, she’s back in present day where she is met with a visit from her husband. The pair reunite and return home to navigate their family grief together.

I really enjoyed reading this type of book. A magical mystery isn’t a genre I could say I’ve ever ventured into, and I think maybe at the back of my mind, it’s been something I’ve wanted to experience. I didn’t even realise it was a magical mystery until towards the end of the book, I just couldn’t put my finger on what I thought it was.

Throughout the book, I questioned whether Katy’s mother was alive, which lead me to develop a series of theories on what I thought was happening. Initially, I thought Katy was in a coma following an accident, which was leading to her dreaming about her mother. Then as I read, I developed a theory that it wasn’t actually her mother – just a person that was very similar. It’s safe to say, I wasn’t expecting the time travel aspect of this book. It surprised me to say the least, but I didn’t not like it – I’m still undecided. I do like how at the end, I was able to understand what happened to the other characters we were introduced to – for example, we learned that Adam returned home and met his wife and went onto have children and also that he wasn’t successful in buying the hotel.

The story as a whole really tugged at my heartstrings, as someone who is also very close with their mother. It put my life into perspective and made me feel all the emotions of grief for myself and also for Katy.

As I read, I felt like I was following along in Katy’s grief and fully felt what she would’ve felt. What I’m surprised about, is that I didn’t cry at all when reading it. I felt the emotions in my chest, but never released them.

After reading this book, I didn’t feel like anything was missing, but I had hopes that she would’ve reunited with her mother despite the whole circumstances.

I liked how the end of the story was nicely explained and tied to a close – I liked that I feel peaceful that the characters are together and happy moving on with their lives.

Could it be classed as cheating when it’s during time travel and the reality isn’t real? Throughout the story, I wasn’t sure how to feel on Katy’s estranged marriage with her husband and her subsequent relationship with Adam. Then when I realised it was a magical mystery, I was even more unsure on how to feel.

I will say, emotions did hit at the end of the story during the author acknowledgements where it was shown that parts of the story were based on real people. For example, the location and hotel interactions in the book were based on a real family that own the hotel.

Overall, I loved experiencing a different genre of book and it’s got me excited to venture into more genres outside of romances and thrillers. I’m also equally intrigued to explore more of Rebecca’s writing.

Newlyweds Tricia and Ethan are searching for the house of their dreams.

But when they visit the remote manor that once belonged to Dr. Adrienne Hale, a renowned psychiatrist who vanished without a trace four years earlier, a violent winter storm traps them at the estate… with no chance of escape until the blizzard comes to an end.

In search of a book to keep her entertained until the snow abates, Tricia happens upon a secret room. One that contains audio transcripts from every single patient Dr. Hale has ever interviewed. As Tricia listens to the cassette tapes, she learns about the terrifying chain of events leading up to Dr. Hale’s mysterious disappearance.

Tricia plays the tapes one by one, late into the night. With each one, another shocking piece of the puzzle falls into place, and Dr. Adrienne Hale’s web of lies slowly unravels.

And then Tricia reaches the final cassette.

My Thoughts:

For letter N of my reading challenge, I was torn between Never Lie by Freida McFadden and Never Never by Colleen Hoover, so when I saw Never Lie was on sale for 99p, my decision was made for me.

This year I delved deeper into the work by Freida McFadden and I have to say, I’ve loved every second of it. I have been hoping to find an author who writes similar to Colleen Hoover’s Verity and I think I’ve found her.
The last book I read by Freida was The Wife Upstairs, which I absolutely loved, so you can imagine my excitement when it came to read Never Lie.

Never Lie follows newly weds, Tricia and Ethan as they explore a new home far from where they currently live. Only when driving to their possible future home, a blizzard starts – leaving them stranded at the home without any contact signal.

Tricia has uneasy feelings towards the home, after discovering it belonged to the famous Dr Adrienne Hale who went messing and was never found. When Tricia reveals her feelings to her husband, she’s reassured by him as he believes the home will be a brilliant place for them to raise future children.

As they are left stranded at the house and without a way of contacting help, the pair spend the night at the home with the plan of leaving the next day. As they spend the night, Tricia begins hearing weird and strange noises, leading her to believe they are not alone. When presenting these worries, Ethan reassures her that she’s being paranoid. Tricia becomes further paranoid when she discovers fresh food in the fridge, despite the house being abandoned for a while – Ethan reveals it would have been the estate agent, which Tricia isn’t so easy to believe.

With the home being left vacant for so long, there’s no electricity or heating, meaning that they will have to entertain themselves and use Dr Hale’s remaining clothes to keep warm. Tricia discovers tapes from Adrienne which she begins listening to, to help pass time.

The story flicks between past and present, solely focusing on the present but reflecting on the past, as and when Tricia listens to a tape recording. These tape recordings are of Dr Adrienne’s session with her patients.

Tricia slowly starts to listen to the tapes, where she learns of Adrienne’s patient EJ, who began blackmailing her, in exchange of free therapy sessions after his mother requested to end them. The deranged patient witnessed Adrienne vandalise a car after they beat her into a space and therefore, recorded her as blackmail for continuing their sessions. With her career at stake, Adrienne has no choice but to continue the therapy sessions.

In present time, Tricia becomes more and more paranoid of the house and its haunted history, when items from around the home start to appear in different places. Tricia’s paranoia leaves her feeling even more uneasy, after it is revealed that she is pregnant and is yet to tell Ethan.

During Tricia’s listening session, she learns that Adrienne became well known for her published work, where she produced a book containing patient stories – one of which was from a traumatised survivor who witnessed the brutal murder of her friends and fiancé after they were attacked by an unknown and unfound person.

After listening to that tape, Tricia begins reflecting on her own previous engagement where she reveals it ended because it didn’t work out. Tricia details how her friends believed her new marriage with Ethan was a red flag and were concerned with how quick their relationship progressed.

When Tricia can’t sleep, she decides to go into Adrienne’s office to listen to more tapes. During this, she picks out a tape for another patient labelled GW where Adrienne’s patient believes everyone is out to kill her, including her own son. Tricia listens as Dr Hale discusses the patient case and how she can overcome the anxiety she’s experiencing. Tricia is interrupted of the tape, when she hears a noise from outside the office. When she exists, she discovers a painting of Dr Hale had been put back on the wall, despite it being removed by Ethan the night before.

By listening to the tapes, Tricia is able to piece together that Adrienne had a boyfriend.

During the past, Adrienne revealed the blackmail of her patient EJ, to her boyfriend Luke, to enlist the help of him to hack into the EJ’s computer to delete the file. Adrienne’s boyfriend is apprehensive at first, but decides to help her out after being manipulated by her.

In order to gain access to EJ’s house, they drug him so they are able to retrieve the keys to his house. Only after Adrienne’s boyfriend deletes the files, the blackmailer reveals he knows it was her, leading to further blackmail.

After Adrienne suggests killing her blackmailer, Luke decides to leave her. This doesn’t stop Adrienne, as she discovers that her survivor patient PA, fabricated the whole story and actually killed her friend and fiancé herself, after discovering their affair. Adrienne enlists this patient to help her take out her blackmailer, which her patient does – only she becomes concerned about what Adrienne will do with the body and whether she will turn the survivor in.

Upon Adrienne mysteriously disappearing, her boyfriend Luke was named as the first person of interest within her disappearance and possible murder. Luke was arrested, but was ultimately let go due to insufficient evidence.

After things in the house become more and more eerie, Ethan finally believes his wife Tricia’s concerns. The pair begin looking through Adrienne’s office, where they find a secret latch under her desk and after moving furniture to investigate inside, they discover the body of EJ.

This prompts Ethan to set up a plan to leave the house to find help, so they can get out of the house. Only before he leaves, they discover they were in fact not alone in Dr Hale’a abandoned home and they were unknowingly joined by Luke, Adrienne’s boyfriend.

The pair begin to tie Luke up, out of fear he was responsible for Adrienne’s murder, with Ethan demanding Tricia not to visit Luke whilst he’s gone looking for help.

The story reverts back to present day, where Tricia reveals that she is PA(Tricia) and she was the one who killed EJ (Edmund) in order to help Adrienne escape her blackmailer. It is also revealed that GW is Gail Wiley, who is Ethan’s mother who he killed after needing money and wanting her insurance payout. Tricia further reveals how she knew all along about Ethan’s role in his mother’s death and how she brought Ethan to the house to hide the body of EJ and to push Ethan to confess. She also reveals that she was the one responsible for moving things around the house in an attempt to make her appear innocent.

After being paranoid about Adrienne’s intentions of EJ’s body and whether she’ll hand PA(Tricia) in, Tricia visits Adrienne herself demanding answers. Only when Adrienne refuses to let Tricia in on her plans following her blackmailers murder, Tricia decides only two can keep a secret if one of them is dead – leading her to kill Dr Adrienne Hale herself.

Tricia’s plan was set into motion after Tricia learned that her mother was good friends of Gail, who would regularly discuss her son. This lead Tricia to befriend Gail where she could learn more information about Ethan, before finally gaining contact with him.

Tricia catches Ethan burning the tapes of the sessions his mother had with Adrienne, resulting in her to push Ethan to reveal the truth, before Tricia reveals her own truth to Ethan. This leads Ethan to conclude that Luke will be an issue and therefore, will need to be killed.

The story concludes with Ethan and Tricia living in the home of Dr Adrienne Hale with the bodies of their past, as they step into family life, raising their daughter.

When I set out reading this book, I was convinced I had the plot of the story figured out instantly! I believed that Dr Hale was murdered by EJ because of his obsession with her, who became sour after being rejected by her. I also believed EJ to be Ethan, who love bombed Tricia into a fast marriage, in hopes of Tricia filling in the void of Dr Hale. Oh how I was so wrong!

What I love the most about Freida’s writing is that she always directs you towards a certain prediction, but then blindsides you by going in the opposite direction, which you don’t realise until it’s happening! I think after revisiting the plot, I’ve come to realisation on how she does it! Frieda is able to blindside the reader by withholding information from the reader, that upon its revealing, is very obvious to the reader. For example, as a reader, I only saw the initials of Adrienne’s patients, but then towards the end, we learn of their full names which can then be tied to other characters. Pa(Tricia) we knew as PA and only knew Tricia as Tricia, which we learned the truth in the reveal. I’ve come to the conclusion that Freida only gives got the information she wants you to know so that the plot of the story isn’t instantly given away.

I really didn’t see it coming that Tricia was a patient of Adrienne Hale, who was known as Patricia and survived a fake knife attack. I didn’t suspect that Tricia was lying because we were literally reading about her POV! I didn’t even make the connection when she mentioned having an ex fiancé that didn’t work out.

I think I would’ve rated it higher, if I hadn’t of been so tired when reading it. Because I was so tired at the time of reading the ending, I ended up putting it down for the evening, which meant I was in the middle of the reveal, so I almost prevented myself from feeling the full shock factor and heart racing moment.

I also feel like I had a lot of questions after I’d finished it and I think that’s partially to do with the fact that we read from Tricia’s perspective and we were sort of lied to at times.

Synopsis:

It was supposed to be a relaxing vacation in sweet, sunny Cape Cod – just me and my beloved brother – but discovering a corpse in our rental house really throws a wrench into our tanning schedule.

Now a rude, crude bounty hunter has arrived on the back of his motorcycle to catch the killer and refuses to believe I can be helpful, despite countless hours of true crime podcast listening. Not to mention a fulfilling teaching career of wrangling second graders.

A brash bounty hunter and an energetic elementary schoolteacher: the murder-solving team no one asked for, but thanks to these pesky attempts on my life, we’re stuck together, come hell or high tide.

I’m just here to do a job, not babysit an amateur sleuth. Although . . . it is becoming less and less of a hardship to have her around. Sure, she’s stubborn, distracting and can’t stay out of harm’s way. She’s also brave and beautiful and reminds me of the home I left behind three years ago. In other words, the insatiable hunger and protectiveness she is waking up in me is a threat to my peace of mind. Before I sink any deeper into this dangerous attraction, I need to solve this murder and get back on the road.

But will fate take her from me before I realise the road has been leading to her all along?

My Thoughts:

I’m at the point in my A-Z reading challenge where I feel like I am rushing to get it completed, even though we’re only halfway through the year. I just have to many books that I want to read that, annoyingly, don’t fit in with the remaining titles.

Throughout June I decided to prioritise my A-Z title choices, which has lead me to letter M – My Killer Vacation by Tessa Bailey. I’m not sure whether I can count this as a choice because the word ‘My’ feels like a bit of a cop out – similar to using a book starting with the word ‘The’ for the letter T! Anyways, as you can see, I still went ahead and completed it!

It’s safe to say I’m familiar with the work of Tessa Bailey, seeing as I’ve read It Happened One Summer, Hook, Line and Sinker and Wreck The Halls.

My Killer Vacation follows school teacher Taylor and her brother on a summer vacation in a rented home in Cape Cod. Not long after they arrive, they discover a dead body in their rental property, which reveals to be their landlord. This shocking discovery takes their vacation in a very different direction to what they had planned.

With an interest in true crime, Taylor becomes intrigued at the reasons behind her landlords’s murder and after speaking to his sister, Taylor begins to question who did it. Her questions encourage the landlord’s sister to hire a bounty hunter to help uncover the truth about her brother’s murder.

When Taylor begins sneaking back into the crime scene to uncover clues, she bumps into the bounty hunter who is tasked with solving the murder, Myles – Taylor reacts in a way that’s unexpected. The man should be terrifying – he seems to scare everyone else – but it’s clear that Myles is incredibly attracted to Taylor. Myles warns Taylor away from the start, but chemistry seems to keep pulling them back together, and it’s not long before they’re both acting out of character.

Whilst at the crime scene, Taylor discovers evidence that was missed by the police, which she decides to take in her own attempt at an investigation, later revealing it to Myles who discovers she could be valuable to his investigation.

The story follows Myles and Taylor as they navigate working together to uncover the mysterious murder of her landlord, much to Myles distain at having her join in on his work. Whilst working together, the pair navigate the electric spark between them, attempting to ignore it.
However, Taylor reveals that she feels like she’s not had the full experience in previous relationships. This leads Myles and Taylor to begin a sexual relationship with one another. As the pair spend more time together, feelings begin to grow stronger, making Myles want to pull away after making a mistake in a previous investigation and therefore, not wanting to repeat the same error.

The pair working together, begin to discover small details about her landlord’s murder, including the mayor of the town not being happy about landlord’s renting out homes to vacationers. When Taylor is looking further into a lead, she is hit over the head with a book, knocking her unconscious when she discovers more information.

Myles rushes to her side and becomes regretful after letting his guard down and becoming distracted by Taylor. He begins to realise that Taylor and her brother are a target since they themselves are vacationers. This discovery comes following an attack on Taylor’s beach house, where the window was smashed in and her assault with a library book.

With the clash over the head, Taylor struggles to remember what she discovered before her attack. Slowly, the pieces come back together, where she discovers the mayor of the town is responsible for the murder.
After further investigating, the pair discover that it was the mayors assistant who killed the landlord.

Following the closure of the murder investigation, Taylor and her brother return home and are accompanied by Myles, who decides to follow his heart.

*My Note:* I read this book so long ago and clearly because I didn’t enjoy it, I can’t remember any details about the book – like who the murder was. I think it was the mayors assistant.
I was slightly apprehensive about reading My Killer Vacation and was trying to find an alternative for the letter, but unfortunately I couldn’t find anything that was short enough and a standalone. I think my apprehension came from the fact that Tessa typically writes in third person, which is something I’ve learned I don’t like. However, I was pleasantly surprised when I started reading this book, that it’s actually written in first person – making it more tolerable.

I can’t lie, I found this book to be slightly confusing to read because I noticed a lot of errors in the writing and I’m not sure if that’s because it’s been translated to a Kindle Ebook, or if it naturally contained a lot of errors. However, since I noticed this, I found that I couldn’t enjoy the book because I felt like my reading flow was constantly interrupted when I spotted mistakes.

Initially, I struggled with an interest to read this book and I have to say, I didn’t massively enjoy it. I can’t exactly put my finger on why I didn’t overly like it, but it is slightly irritating me because I just felt ‘meh’ about it.

What I did enjoy in this book were the little snippets we saw of Myles’ humour and how it started to appear, the further along we got into the book. He had such a dry sense of humour, that came across very sarcastic and witty, which bounced right off Taylor’s dopey personality. I really enjoyed the bouncing back between Taylor and Myles’ personalities and the one liners they each would have.

Aside from what I did like, I just felt like I wasn’t hooked on the book. I enjoyed the idea of the story, but I felt like the premise of the mystery murder wasn’t happening much throughout the book. It felt like it was mentioned in small clusters and not to be mentioned again until the next cluster. Because of this, I just don’t think I was able to develop stronger feelings towards the book as a whole.

After reading this book, I think I’ve come to the conclusion that Tessa Bailey’s books aren’t for me and it’s annoying me because I don’t know why. I just find that I never really, fully enjoy her books after I’ve read them. They always feel like they’re missing something. I feel like she’s popular-ish on TikTok because of the levels of spice in her books, but aside from that, I feel like there isn’t a lot of depth to her plots.

I think I’m slightly disappointed because I liked (or I think I liked) It Happened One Summer and Hook, Line and Sinker, but maybe that’s because I read those a while ago and I’ve since found authors who I prefer?

This year has taught me that I don’t need to love every author that I read, but I can’t help but feel deflated when I am excited to read a book by an author and don’t end up liking it.

I don’t think I’m going to rule out Tessa Bailey completely, but I wouldn’t be jumping to prioritise her books.
